COSMETOLOGY/BARBERING PROGRAM STANDARDS


In order to maintain the highest of standards, the Cosmetology/Barbering Program has established a set of standards to assist in providing consistency of management procedures.  The student, the program, and the instructor all benefit.  By following the Department Standards, first, the student will understand the value of procedures and requirements, second, the patron, who provides the vital hands-on experience, will feel welcome and valued finally, and the Instructors will have a guideline to follow and establish consistency within all sessions of the program.


SANITATION

  1. Each student is to keep his/her working area clean at all times in accordance with the Salt Lake Valley Board of Health and CTEC Cosmetology/Barbering requirements. An instructor may ask a student to stop a service and bring their work area in accordance to these standards.

  1. The student is responsible to have all equipment and tools set up and ready to begin servicing patrons at the designated time for that given program.

    • Lockers are provided for storing personal property.  Students are not to leave equipment, purses, books, etc. on work stations or on the floor around work stations.  Excessive items pose a safety hazard and look unprofessional.

  1. Students are responsible for maintaining the following:

·        Chair, work station and mirror kept clean and sanitized.
·        Wet sanitizer must be kept free from excessive amounts of sediment and disinfectant product changed regularly, as needed.  Implements must be able to be completely immersed in the disinfecting solution.
·        Hair must be swept up immediately after a hair cut is completed and before hair styling occurs.
·        Wipe down back bar and shampoo sink immediately after use.
·        No food is allowed in the lab area at any time.  Drinks must be in a covered container.
·        Clean up personal trash in the break area and leave the area sanitized.
·        Students are assigned a daily sanitation duty.  The student is expected to complete this assignment every day regardless of arrival or departure time.

TIME CLOCK

  1. To verify clock hours earned, it is recommended by the Department of Professional Licensing that the student be punctual in clocking in and out of the days’ attendance.  If a discrepancy occurs with the student’s clock hour total, the time clock will be the determining factor.

RECEPTIONIST/APPOINTMENTS

  1. Appointments are made by Lorrie or the assigned student receptionist only.  Changes may only be made by an instructor or office staff member and may not be changed by the students.

  1. It is expected of the student to willingly accept any service in a congenial manner.

  1. IMPORTANT:  If a student denies an appointment, that student will receive no clock hours per the instructor’s discretion and a letter of reprimand will be placed in the students file.




Text Box: If the student is unable to attend class, they are asked to be responsible, considerate, and professional by informing the receptionist of their absence in a timely manner so that arrangements can be made for the clients.

GENERAL STANDARDS

  1. Cell Phones – Are not allowed during classroom time, instructional activities, and field trips.  Cellular telephones must remain off during these times. Refer to the Cell Phone Procedure Policy

  1. Electronic devices – such as I pods, mp3’s, etc. are not allowed during class time.

  1. Visitors:
    • Student’s visitors may not be on the lab floor. 
    • Only the client receiving the appointment may be on the lab floor.
    • CTEC students may not have visitors loitering in the building or on school property during or after school hours.

  1. Language – Improper language and some subject matters may be offensive to others.  Please be respectful of those around you.

  1. All buildings on campus are smoke free and drug free zones. 

RESPECT OF OTHERS 

Respect of others is mandatory.  If at any time the student is defiant or disrespectful to a class member, receptionist, client or instructor the instructor may implement all or some of the following actions may:
·        The student will not earn clock hours. 
·        The student will be excused for the session.
·        The student will be referred to the principal for disciplinary action. 
·        A letter will be placed in the student file. 
·        The student may return the following day if the instructor has not specified another procedure.
